Tutorean is an online tutoring platform that matches students and private tutors according to their specific needs. We use artificial intelligence to fingerprint how students learn best and use this information to match them with tutors whose teaching style is a good fit. Ultimately, this creates a better learning experience for each and every student and a more rewarding teaching experience for tutors.
Students will have access to a carefully selected community of tutors. Your profile appears alongside other tutors in the search results, along with your ratings and reviews, and students can message you directly. Bear in mind you can also actively apply for new tutoring opportunities in your area, on the 'Jobs' board. You can chat with students directly, for free, using the instant messenger - which is where you ultimately book your tutoring lessons.
Once you have decided on a time and place for the lesson, you must send a booking request and wait for the student to confirm, which they do by entering their payment details. You will then be able to share contact details and you’ll be paid automatically into your bank account once the lesson is complete.
You can apply to become a tutor here. Signing up is super easy… all you have to do is follow a few basic steps to get your profile ready for submission. Once you’ve submitted your profile, our review team will process your application, after which you will be accepted into the expanding community. You will also be invited to complete a one-way online interview which will help you become a fully-fledged Tutorean tutor.
Our tutors cover a wide variety of subjects including Maths, English, Science, Computing, Languages, Music, Psychology, Business, Economics, Art, Design, Drama and many other subjects. Here is a complete list of subjects you can tutor. We’re an all-inclusive platform so whatever you want to teach, there’s space for you!
Students vary from primary school children to mature adults looking to pick up a new skill. Whatever age range you teach, or want to teach, Tutorean will give you the opportunity to make a difference.
You'll be paid straight to your bank account, within 1 week of completing the lesson.
Don't forget to update your payment details. You can do so by logging in, going to "settings" and clicking on the payments tab.
Lessons are typically held in-person at a location and time agreed upon by the student and yourself. You can also set yourself up as an online tutor, which means you can also book online lessons and tutor using an existing video platform such as Skype.
Once all the relevant details for a lesson have been agreed between you and the student (e.g. time and location), it is then up to you to book the first lesson by sending a booking request. The student will confirm the lesson by entering their payment details, after which you’ll receive a confirmation and the lesson will appear in your schedule. You can edit the booking request should you need to make any changes, as long as it is before the student confirms it.
Before making the booking, please ensure your payment details and identification are up to date in your ‘Settings’.
*All lessons must be booked through the Tutorean website. If lessons are paid for outside of the platform, this may result in immediate dismissal from Tutorean. For more information please read our Tutor Terms and Conditions.
It is completely free to sign up and create your profile on Tutorean.
Tutorean charges a service fee of 15% for each lesson (with VAT included). So, if you charge £100 for a lesson you will be paid £85. We do not charge anything on top for students who book with you.
Every tutor is different and so are their hourly rates. The best way to find out how much other tutors are charging is by doing a quick search, in the usual way, by entering your subject and location on the homepage. You will be able to see each tutor’s rate in the right hand side of their profile and you can sort tutors by ‘price’.
When considering your hourly rate, bear in mind that Tutorean charges a flat commission (15%) for each lesson. You can choose to set a different price every time you make a new booking: this can be useful if you need to include things like travel fees on top.
You may have noticed that it’s possible to sort tutors by ‘Ranking’... but what does this actually mean? Well, Tutorean’s own ranking algorithm means that tutors at the top of this search are the highest rated and most in demand.
These tutors have:
- Completed our online interview...
- ...and have therefore been rated and reviewed by our team
- Booked and completed multiple lessons on Tutorean
- A magical profile, including a profile video
- Communicated with parents promptly and thoughtfully
- Uploaded their DBS
- Had reviews from past and present students (not necessarily on Tutorean)
At Tutorean, we’re trying to make the online tutoring sphere more human. We actually meet many of our tutors to try and understand who they are and what they care about.
That means we’re confident our tutors are the best we can find and love supporting them, helping them grow to become the best teachers and mentors they can be.
We believe you should have complete control over your sessions, which is why you set your own hourly rate and can change this at any time.
This is a great place to share your values and what you really care about. So… apart from being yourself, think about answering the following:
- What do you study / what’s your career?
- What makes you a great tutor?
- Why do you tutor?
- What do you like doing in your spare time?
- What would students and parents want to know about you?
If you’ve tutored before, the “Tutoring Experience” section is the perfect place to show off your CV. You may want to consider the following:
- How long have you been tutoring for?
- How many students have you taught?
- What specific exam boards and age groups have you taught?
- What are your biggest successes?
Tagline: this should be a short and engaging summary to promote yourself e.g. "Enthusiastic GCSE Physics and Maths Tutor"
If you haven’t tutored before, don’t worry, you could write about similar experiences such as mentoring, teaching or volunteering. You may also write why you want to become a tutor, what you are looking forward to most or how will you prepare and structure your lessons.
We don't currently have an online tutoring platform. We’re working on it! But other online video conference platforms (such as Skype) are always an option. We recommend sorting out the details through Tutorean’s messaging platform, booking the lesson and video conferencing away!
You don't need a DBS but it is something that parents and students value a lot. So, it is highly recommended. There are a number of websites where you can apply for an enhanced DBS, such as CRB Direct, Online DBS Checks and DDC. Some companies also offer an update service for £13 per annum which allows your DBS check to remain current, and for the certificate to 'travel around' with you from company to company.
